Can Tho Port Joint Stock Company (under Vietnam Maritime Corporation – VIMC) said that the Can Tho – Cai Mep sea transport route (Ba Ria - Vung Tau province) will be inaugurated on May 30. This is considered a new turning point for Vietnam's logistics industry in general and the export of goods in the Mekong Delta in particular

This sea shipping route not only helps to optimize time and cost, but is also an important foundation for goods in the Mekong Delta region to reach out to many international markets.

TS. Le Quang Trung, Deputy General Director of VIMC, Chairman of Can Tho Port, said that the Can Tho – Cai Mep shipping route will use 3,000-ton ships with a frequency of 2 trips a week.

"This is a breakthrough in time when the journey will be shortened from 48 hours to only 15 hours, reducing nearly 70% of the time compared to the traditional river transportation method. This not only helps businesses save operating costs but also speeds up the movement of goods, promptly meeting supply chain requirements," Dr. Le Quang Trung emphasized.

Affirming that this sea route not only stops at economic efficiency but also brings great benefits to the environment, the Chairman of Can Tho - Cai Mep port said that the sea transportation of Can Tho - Cai Mep will help reduce CO2 emissions by more than 60% compared to road transportation. contributing to sustainable development efforts and minimizing the impact on climate change.

A big plus point of this sea freight route is the ability to flexibly meet the needs of transporting both dry and refrigerated goods. This is a key factor, especially important in the context of the growing cold supply chain in the Mekong Delta. Stable and efficient sea transportation will provide maximum support for agricultural and fishery products, which are the region's strengths.

More specifically, Cai Mep Port is one of the major international gateway ports, where there is a system of direct ships to Europe, North America and the Middle East. The direct connection from Can Tho Port to Cai Mep will open up great potential for the development of transcontinental transport routes, creating opportunities to connect directly with major markets around the world.

This is said to be an important foundation to gradually form a direct export logistics corridor by sea for the Southwest region in the near future. This strategic sea shipping route is the result of cooperation between member units of Vietnam Maritime Corporation (VIMC) and DP World Group, one of the world's leading port operators and logistics.

VIMC and DP World Group agreed to cooperate in the development of Can Tho Port and the exploitation of inland waterway transport routes and the development of logistics systems.

Previously, at the Vietnamese-UAE business seminar program held in Dubai in October, under the witness of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, VIMC and DP World Group signed a cooperation agreement on the development of Can Tho Port and the exploitation of inland waterway transport routes and the development of logistics systems.

It is known that Can Tho Port Joint Stock Company (VIMC) is working with Tan Cang Waterway Transport Joint Stock Company (Saigon Newport Corporation - SNP) to exploit Cai Cui port, located on the Hau River, in Cai Rang district, Can Tho city.

Cai Cui Port plays an important role in the circulation of goods such as fertilizers, iron and steel, imported timber, motorcycles and equipment for large projects in the Mekong Delta.

However, for many years, the general operation at Cai Cui port has not been fully effective, mainly because the depth of the navigable channel from the sea to the Hau River is not guaranteed, making it difficult to receive large-tonnage ships. Facing that situation, in April, the Prime Minister asked Saigon Newport Corporation, Vietnam Maritime Corporation together with Can Tho City People's Committee to study the best plan to develop Cai Cui port in the coming time.
